What Is Fibromyalgia
Formerly known as fibrositis, fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by the persistent of widespread body pains, stiffness; and muscles, tendons, and joints tenderness. It was only recent that fibromyalgia is accepted as a serious medical condition and not just a stress-triggered psychosomatic condition. Although what is fibromyalgia may differ from a patient to a doctor's perspective, but the one thing they all agree on is that this condition affects the lives of the sufferers very badly.
Fibromyalgia patients suffer from extreme pain without obvious cause. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, for example, wherein the pain emanates from muscular and joint inflammation, fibromyalgia patients complain about extreme pain in perfectly find looking tissues. Other than the excruciating pain, fibromyalgia patient will not suffer any organ or tissue damage; but of course, as if the pain is not damaging enough.
What is fibromyalgia to patients is an extreme suffering from pain from the tiniest stimuli like a soft touch from their children or a brush with the curtain. It's common to see fibromyalgia patients not wanting to wear heavy clothing (or any at all) because the sensation of the cloth to their skin could be excruciatingly painful. And, the pain could prevail even without the stimuli in some cases.
Although fibromyalgia is noncontiguous, it is believed to be hereditary. Now known to be a medical condition, if fibromyalgia is prevalent among the family, then there is a great chance that the children could inherit it, too.
What is fibromyalgia to doctors could be varying. Some doctors genuinely believe that this condition is still psychosomatic. It seems to appear suddenly when patients are under stress or suffering from other psychological disorders such as depression. But, a growing number of health professionals are now looking at the possibility that fibromyalgia stems from serious causes (genetic or otherwise), and they are treating the syndrome as a medical condition.
Doctors and patients, though, now have greater understanding of the syndrome. And no matter what is fibromyalgia to them, they know that the syndrome warrants further research; and fortunately, the medical profession is quick to respond.
